The Negro National League was formed in 1920 in Kansas City, Missouri in response to African American baseball players being banned from the major leagues. The modern silver coin, minted only for collectors, was first struck in 90 silver with its current design in 1964 to honor President John F. Mint will commemorate the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding with redesigned circulating coins as part of the Semiquincentennial Coin Program.
